چکیده

Poisson's ratio ow diagrams, that is, the Poisson's ratio versus the ber fraction , are obtained numerically for hexagonal arrays of elastic circular bers in an elastic matrix. High numerical accuracy is achieved through the use of an interface integral equation method. Questions concerning xed point theorems and the validity of existing asymptotic relations are investigated and partially resolved. Our ndings for the transverse eeective Poisson's ratio, together with earlier results for random systems by other authors, make it possible to formulate a general statement for Poisson's ratio ow diagrams: For composites with circular bers and where the phase Poisson's ratios are equal to 1/3, the system with the lowest stiiness ratio has the highest Poisson's ratio. For other choices of the elastic moduli for the phases, no simple statement can be made.

Monitoring Poisson’s Ratio Degradation of FRP Composites under Fatigue Loading Using Biaxially Embedded FBG Sensors

The significance of strain measurement is obvious for the analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites. Conventional strain measurement methods are sufficient for static testing in general. Nevertheless, if the requirements exceed the capabilities of these conventional methods, more sophisticated techniques are necessary to obtain strain data. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors have man...

Analytical and Numerical Investigation of FGM Pressure Vessel Reinforced by Laminated Composite Materials

In this research, the analytical and numerical investigation of a cylindrical shell made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) reinforced by laminated composite subjected to internal pressure is presented. Using the infinitesimal theory of elasticity, the analytical solution of stress and strain in vessels made of FGMs is studied first. It is assumed that the elasticity modulus follows a powe...

Multiple-cell Modeling of ®ber-reinforced Composites with the Presence of Interphases Using the Boundary Element Method

In this paper, an advanced boundary element method (BEM) with thin-body capabilities is applied to model multiple cells of ®ber-reinforced composites with the consideration of the interphases. E€ects of the multiple-cell models, as compared to the unit-cell model, in determining the e€ective material constants in the transverse plane, are studied. In this BEM approach, the interphases are model...

Modeling of interface cracks in ®ber-reinforced composites with the presence of interphases using the boundary element method

An advanced boundary element method (BEM) with thin-body capabilities was developed recently for the study of interphases in ®ber-reinforced composite materials (Y.J. Liu, N. Xu and J.F. Luo, Modeling of interphases in ®berreinforced composites under transverse loading using the boundary element method, ASME J. Appl. Mech. 67 (2000) 41±49). In this BEM approach, the interphases are modeled as t...

Poisson's ratio in composite elastic media with rigid rods.

We calculate both the micromechanical response and bulk elastic constants of composites of rods embedded in elastic media. We find two fixed points for Poisson's ratio with respect to rod density: there is an unstable fixed point for Poisson's ratio =1/2 (an incompressible system) and a stable fixed point for Poisson's ratio =1/4 (a compressible system). We also derive approximate expressions f...
